Unit-1 Social Movements: Concept, Social Movements and Social Change, Leadership and Ideology, Characteristics and Classification of Social Movements, Elements of Social Movements, Life Cycle of Social Movements.
Unit-2 Perspectives on Emergence of Social Movements: Functionalist, Marxist, Gandhian, Resource Mobilization.
Unit-3 Globalisation and Social Movements: Information Technology, Trans-national Networks, Anti-globalisation Social Movements
Unit-4 Social Movements in India: Agrarian Movements, Dalit Movements, Backward Castes Movements, Ethnic Movements, Naxalite Movement.
Unit-5 New Social Movements in India: Environmental Movement, Anti-displacement Movements, LGBT Movements.
Course Objectives
- To familiarize students with social science perspectives in the study of social movements.
- To provide a basic understanding of and critical insights into factors and issues associated with social movements in India.
Course Outcomes
1. Understand the processes and mechanisms of social movements <br />2. Comprehend the various dimensions of and mechanism through which movements operate. <br />3. Appreciate social movements in Indian context.
