Syllabus

Module 1: Concept of Tribe, Tribes as indigenous people, Scheduled Tribes in India, Distribution of STs in India, Classification of tribes: Racial and Linguistic, Major tribes in India, Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups, Tribe and Caste.

Module 2: Tribes in Pre-Colonial India, Colonial India and Post-Colonial India
De-notified, Nomadic and Semi-nomadic tribes
Tribal Culture: Social, economic, political and religious dimensions

Module 3: Tribal problems in India – Land alienation, Indebtedness, Education, Forest Policy and Tribals, health, Impact of Development on Tribal life (Industrialization and Urbanization), Displacement and Rehabilitation, Tribal movements in post-independent India Inter-tribal disparities and conflicts.

Module 4: Policies and approaches towards tribal communities in India: Isolation, Assimilation and Integration – pre and post-independence periods Constitutional safe-guards for tribes Tribal development programmes – S.M.P.T. Blocks, I.T.D.P., M.A.D.A. and Development of PVTGs Tribal Sub-Plan – Scheduled Tribe Component.

Module 5: Trends of tribal studies in India, emergence of tribal studies as an academic discipline.

Course Objectives

  • To introduce the concept of tribe, indigenous people, Scheduled Tribe, and Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups.
  • To expose students to the tribal culture and status from pre-colonial to post-colonial India,
  • To familiarize the problems of tribes
  • To explain the approaches and policies towards tribal communities

Course Outcomes

After the completion of this course, students will be able to: <br /> <br />CO1: understand the various terms, concepts and categories of tribes, <br />CO2: learn the status of tribes from pre-colonial to post-colonial India, <br />CO3: identify various problems of tribes, <br />CO4: explain the policies of tribal development <br />CO5: comprehend the trends in tribal studies
