Elastic behavior of materials Tensor analysis Strength of Defect-Free Solids Measurements of Elasticity, Strength, and Fracture Toughness Stress distribution Viscous and viscoelastic behavior of ceramics Brittle Fracture Crack Propagation and R Curve Behavior Dislocations and Plastic Deformation in Ceramics Hardness and Wear Toughening Mechanisms in Ceramics Effect of microstructure on Toughness and Strength Statistical Treatment of Strength Creep and associated mechanisms: Nabarro-Herring creep, Coble creep, solute drag creep, dislocation climb-glide creep Superplasticity and its mechanisms (grain-boundary sliding accommodated by diffusional flow, grain-boundary sliding accommodated by dislocation flow), strain-rate sensitivity and superplastic behavior, Fine structured superplastic ceramics High temperature fracture modes, Intergranular creep fracture (void nucleation, void growth) Empirical formulas for the rupture time in creep regime: the Sherby-Dorn parameter, the Larson-Mellar parameter, High temperature fracture-mechanisms maps, Designing aspect of ceramics.
Course Objectives
- To understand the basic concept in mechanical behavior of ceramic materials, their creep and high temperature fracture behavior
- To solve numerical problems related to mechanical properties of ceramics
- To learn and understand literature review in the above topics
- To improve communication skill
Course Outcomes
At the completion of this Course students should be able to: <br />• Understand and explain the basic mechanical behavior of ceramic materials <br />• Understand the technological significance of ceramic materials and components for various engineering applications. <br />• Understand about the diverse field of room temperature as well as high temperature mechanical properties of ceramics.
