Syllabus

Electrochemistry: Redox reactions, Electrode potential, Electrochemical cells, Batteries and Fuel Cells, Applications of Electrochemistry and Numerical problems.
Polymer Chemistry: Introduction, Classification, Synthesis, Characterization, Properties.
Solid State Chemistry: Packing of Solids, Structure of simple binary and ternary compounds, crystal systems, Bravais Lattice, Reciprocal lattice, Crystallographic planes and directions
Spectroscopy: Electromagnetic Radiation and Interaction with matter, Rotational, Vibrational and Electronic Spectroscopy and their applications.
Biomolecules: amino acids, zwitterions and isoelectric point, nomenclature of peptides/proteins, peptide bond formation, protein conformations, function of proteins, protein denaturation and folding Classification of carbohydrates, basic reactions of monosaccharides, mutarotation, glycosides, disaccharides, polysaccharides nucleobases, nucleosides, nucleotides, base pairing, DNA double helix, folding and unfolding of DNA
Green chemistry: the principles and concepts of green chemistry, the 12 guiding principles, sustainable development, atom economy, alternate solvents, newer synthesis methods, catalysis and green chemistry, industrial case studies

Course Objectives

  • To provide a basic level understanding of applied chemistry to the first year UG students
  • To understand the fundamentals of synthetic polymers and bio-polymers, their structures, classifications and functions
  • To have a fundamental understanding of electrochemistry and solid state structures
  • To learn basic principles and applications of spectroscopy in chemistry and to learn green chemistry principles for sustainable development

Course Outcomes

This course aims to provide a basic understanding of applied chemistry. <br />Students will understand how fundamental principles govern electrochemical properties and structures of matter, polymers. <br />Students will learn how to apply principles of spectroscopy to elucidate the structure of molecules. <br />Students will learn chemistry of biomolecules, their structure-function relation. <br />Students will learn how to apply fundamental principles for sustainable development.
