Syllabus

Geometrical:
Fermat's principle of least action, reflection & refraction through spherical surfaces, thin lens & it's focal length, Lateral magnification, lenses separated by a finite distance & equivalent focal length, Thick lens, cardinal points, Aberrations (spherical, chromatic, coma, astigmatism, curvature of field), Hygen's & Ramsden's eye pieces.
Physical:
Interference: Condition for interference, Temporal & spatial coherency, Interference by division of wave front, intensity distribution, Fresnel's Biprism, Displacement of fringes, Interference by division of amplitude, cosine law, Newton's ring , Michelson's interferometer, Multibeam interference, Fabry-Perot interferometry, Interference filters.
Diffraction: Frownhoffer's DIFFRACTION(SINGLE SLIT, DOUBLE SLIT & N-slits), Fresne diffraction, Fresnei's half period zones, theory of zone plates, diffraction due to circular apertures, opaque circular disc, straight edge, narrow wire.
Polarization: Polarized & Unpolarized light, process of transforming Unpolarized light to polarized light, Different types of polarization with basics, Fundamental laws relevant to polarization.
