Module-I (7 Hours)
Power Semiconductor Devices: power diodes, power transistors, SCRs, TRIAC, GTO, power MOSFETs, IGBTs-Principles of operation, characteristics, ratings, protection and gate drive circuits, dv / dt and di / dt protection, Series and parallel operation of Thyristors. (10 Hr)
Module-II (7 Hours)
Controlled rectifiers: Single phase and Three-phase, Effect of Source Inductance, Power factor improvement, Dual converter.
Module-III (7 Hours)
DC-DC converters: Buck, Boost, Buck-Boost converters with circuit configuration and analysis. Introduction to Zero Voltage Switching and Zero Current Switching.
Module-IV (7 Hours)
DC-AC converters: Single phase and Three phase Voltage Source (VSI) and Current Source Inverter (CSI), frequency and voltage control Pulse Width Modulation Techniques (PWM). Introduction to Multilevel Inverter.
Module-V (7 Hours)
AC-AC converter: Single and Three phase controllers, phase control, PWM AC voltage controller, Principle of ON-OFF control and Cyclo-converters.

To study the characteristics and operation of the various semiconductor devices.

To analyze different power electronic Reciters.

To learn the practical application of the different type of DC-DC converters

To learn the practical application of the different type of Inverters

At the end of the course, students will be able to
1. To learn the fundamental concept of power electronic devises
2. To analyze the operation of the different power electronic converters with various loads
3. Design and analyze power converter circuits and learn to select suitable power electronic devices by assessing the requirements of application fields.
4. Identify the critical areas in application levels and derive typical alternative solutions, select suitable power converters to control Electrical Motors and other industry grade apparatus.
5. Recognize the role of power electronics converters play in the improvement of energy usage efficiency and the applications of power electronics in emerging areas.
6. The student will be equipped to take up advanced courses in Power Electronics and its application areas.
