Syllabus
Structural Principles: Crystal Systems, Unit cell, Bravias lattices, symmetry elements, Crystallographic point groups, space groups. Types of close packing - hcp and ccp, packing efficiency, radius ratios polyhedral description of solids structure types -NaCl, ZnS, Na2O, CdCl2, wurtzite, nickel arsenide, CsCl, CdI2, rutile and Cs2O, perovskite ABO3, K2NiF4, spinels. Synthetic Techniques: Solid state reaction, chemical precursor method, co-Precipitation, sol-gel, metathesis, Methods of Single Crystal Growth: Solution growth Melt Growth-Bridgeman, Czochralski, Flux Growth. Characterization methods: X-ray diffraction, and neutron diffraction Microscopic techniques (TEM and SEM) Spectroscopic techniques (X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy, Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy). Electrical and Magnetic Properties: Band theory of solids, Magnetism: Dia, para, ferro, ferri, and antiferro magnetic types soft and hard magnetic materials.
Course Objectives
- To provide the concept of structure, bonding and physical properties of solids. Also this course will provide principles behind different experimental techniques such as x-ray diffraction and microscopic techniques used to characterize various types of crystalline solids.
Course Outcomes
1) The students will able to relate the structure-composition-property co-relations. <br />2) This course will able to provide the basic concepts and depth understanding of many physical properties of solids.
