Subject Nature : Theory

Syllabus

Structure of solids: Unit cells, Crystal systems, Bravias Lattices, Crystallographic directions and planes (exclude Miller-Bravais indices), linear and planar densities, close-packed crystal structures (CCP and HCP), Ceramic structures: Crystal structures of ceramics including NaCl, CsCl, ZnS, CaF2, ABO3 and AB2O4 structures. Imperfections in solids: linear Defects, dislocations, bulk defects. Electrical properties: electrical conduction, energy band structures in solids. Semiconductors: band structures, intrinsic and extrinsic semi-conductors. Dielectric and ferroelectric properties, Magnetic properties: dia, para, ferro, anti-ferro, ferri magnetism.

Course Objectives

  • To provide exposure to the students on structure and various important properties of solids in detail.
  • To provide understanding on correlating the structure with physical properties of the solids.

Course Outcomes

The students will learn various important properties of solids in detail. The students will have comprehensive knowledge about chemistry behind the materials and provide understanding on correlating the structure with physical properties of the solids.
