Course Details

Subject {L-T-P / C} : CY6307 : Mathematics for Chemist { 3-0-0 / 3}

Subject Nature : Theory

Syllabus

Complex numbers: Definition, complex conjugates and polar form. Linear algebra I: Scalars and vectors, addition and multiplications of vectors, dot and cross products. Linear algebra II: Matrix (rank, multiplication, Gauss elimination, inverse of matrix), determinants of second order and third order and general properties (rank: Cramer’s rule). Ordinary differential equations: first and second order linear equations, homogeneous equations, general solution, initial value problems, application in simple harmonic oscillation. Partial differential equations: first and second order linear equations, solutions by separation of variable method, application in vibration in one dimensional string. Probability: elementary concepts on random experiments, outcomes and events (Venn diagram), permutations and combinations.

Course Objectives

  • The course aims to focus on the basic mathematical knowledge of the students.

Course Outcomes

Student would be able to develop strong understanding of the basic mathematical principles which are related to understanding and interpreting the chemistry experimental data.
