Syllabus

The theory and practice of creating safe, healthy and efficient working environment at an underground or surface mine.

Air pollution from surface mining and processing. Sources and classification of air pollutants – standards, monitoring and control. Transport and dispersion of air pollutants, Air quality modeling.

Water quality – physical, chemical, biological, criteria and standards. Monitoring, treatment and control of contaminated water.

Noise and ground vibrations: sources, monitoring, prevention and control.

Tailings: characterization, technical issues, sampling and analysis, site selection and design of tailings impoundment.

Environment planning systems and methodologies based on the principle of sustainable development including environmental impact assessment & management

Course Objectives

  • basic understanding of creating safe, healthy and efficient working environment at an underground or surface mine.
  • Ability to understand the environmental impacts due to air, water, soil and noise.
  • To understand the sampling, analysis and control measures for air, water, soil and noise pollution
  • To understand the concept of sustainable development and the procedure of environmental impact assessment and management.

Course Outcomes

Basic knowledge of different aspects of environment and local, regional and global environmental problems. <br /> <br />Knowledge of environmental monitoring skills, including conduct of experiments and data analysis <br /> <br />Ability to apply the knowledge for design and development of pollution control strategies <br /> <br />Ability to efficient decisions for obtaining environmental clearance and sustainable development goals.
