Module 1 :

ME-3202, METAL CUTTING AND TOOL DESIGN, 3 CREDITS (3-0-0)

Module I [ Hours 6]
Theory of metal cutting: Systems of tool nomenclature, machine reference system and tool reference system and its conversion, Geometry of single point cutting tool, orthogonal cutting and oblique cutting, Pissipanen’s card analogy model, Dynamic shear strain, Dynamic shear stress, Force relationship, Velocity relationship, Merchant’s Force Equilibrium diagram,
Module -II [ Hours 6]
Shear plane theory, Shear zone theory, Merchant and Ernst theory, Modified Merchant theory,Lee and Shaffer theory,
Module III [ Hours 6]
Geomtry of drill bit, Dilling forces, Drilling Torque and Thrust, Geometry of milling cutter, milling forces, milling torque, feed force, vertical force
Module IV [ Hours 6]
Tool failure: Modes of cutting tool failure, tool wear, Taylor’s tool life equation, Tool life test, effect of variables on tool life, machinability criteria, theory and application of cutting fluid,
Economics of machining: Minimum cost, Maximum production and Maximum profit rate
Module V [ Hours 6]
Design of single point cutting tool, Design of flat and circular form tool, Design of broach
Module VI [ Hours 6]
Sheet metal working: Design of simple die, design of compound die, design of progressive die, Design of sheet metal bending, forming and drawing
Jig and fixture: Principles of location and clamping, Design of drilling jig, Design of turning, milling and broaching fixture.
