Syllabus

Module 1 :

ME6274 Computational Methods in Machining and Forming

1. Modelling with MATLAB to determine drilling torque and thrust using Lee and Shaffer theory with and without pilot hole

2. FEM simulation with ANCYS software to determine drilling torque and thrust using twist drill-bit.

3. To determine the stresses induced in the drill bit using ANCYS software and check the failure of drill-bit.

4. To determine the drawing load and pressure distribution at the die-billet interface using MATLAB with linear converging die(Stress-equilibrium approach)

5. To determine drawing load and pressure distribution at the die-billet interface through curved die with MATLAB(Stress-equilibrium approach)

6. To determine rolling load, torque and pressure distribution at roll-workpiece interface with MATLAB for plain strain deformation(Stress equilibrium approach)

7. To determine rolling load, torque, spread and pressure distribution at roll-work-piece interface using MATLAB for three dimensional deformation with stress equilibrium approach

8. To determine drawing load and pressure distribution using FEM simulation with ANCYS software

9. To determine rolling load, torque and pressure distribution at roll-workpiece interface using ANCYS software

Course Objective

1 .

To understand the modeling of machining and metal-forming operation using MATLAB and ANSYS software

2 .

To learn use of ANSYS software for different types of modeling of machining and metal deformation problem

3 .

To develop expertise in programming using MATLAB for different types of machining and forming problem

4 .

To develop expertise modeling of metal-deformation problem with theory of plasticity using ANSYS

Course Outcome

1 .

1. Knowledge will be gained for modeling of machining and metal-forming operation using MATLAB
2. Able to use ANCYS software for modeling of machining and metal forming application
3. Knowledge will be enhanced for the use of MATLAB and ANCYS software to model problems for industrial application
4. Able to model for drawing dies with different profiles
5. Able to model three dimensional rolling process
