Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module-1 (10 classes)
Introduction: Need of nonconventional manufacturing (NCM) processes, Classification and applications of nonconventional machining processes. Mechanical energy based NCM: Abrasive jet machining (AJM), water jet machining (WJM), Abrasive water jet machining (AWJM), ultrasonic machining (USM).
Module-2 (9 classes)
Electro thermal energy based NCM: electro-discharge machining (EDM), Wire- electro discharge machining (WEDM) Chemical energy based: electrochemical machining (ECM), chemical machining.
Module-3 (6 classes)
High energy density methods: Laser beam machining (LBM), Electron beam machining (EBM), Plasma arc machining (PAM).
Module-4 (5 classes)
Hybrid machining: Electro chemical discharge machining (ECDM), Ultrasonic assisted EDM, Electro chemical discharge grinding, Powder suspended EDM.
Module-5 (8 classes)
Microfabrication: Lithography, Thin film deposition like oxidation, PVD, CVD etc., Various Etching methods. Micro- and nano- machining

Course Objective

1 .

Understanding the energy sources for non-conventional manufacturing methods

2 .

Learning about different types of non-conventional methods of manufacturing and advance machines, and their control factors

3 .

Designing of various parts/components of different types of non-conventional manufacturing methods

4 .

Learning about different types of micro-fabrication methods.

Course Outcome

1 .

CO1: Knowledge of various non-conventional manufacturing processes and their applications in various engineering sectors.
CO2: Understanding the process mechanism of various nonconventional manufacturing processes.
CO3: Understanding the various components, and their design criterion for different nonconventional manufacturing methods.
CO4: Able to evaluate the productivity and quality improvement by solving analytical problems.
CO5: Can solve practical/industrial problems with the knowledge of advance manufacturing processes.
