Course Details

Subject {L-T-P / C} : ME6531 : Cryogenic Process Engineering { 3-0-0 / 3}

Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module 1: Properties of Solid and liquid at low temperature [8 Hours]
Mechanical, thermal, electrical, and superconductivity properties of engineering materials.
Properties of cryogens viz., Oxygen, Nitrogen, Hydrogen, Helium and Neon
Module 2: Separation and Purification Systems [12 hours]
Ideal Separation of Gases, Characteristics of Mixtures, Principles of Gas Separation, Calculation of number plate column for gas separation, Air Separation Systems, Hydrogen Separation Systems, Helium Separation Systems, Gas Purification.
Module 3: Cryogenic Instrumentation [10 hours]
Properties Characterizing Cryogenic Instrumentation, Temperature, Pressure, Liquid Level, Displacement and Position
Module 4: Storage and Transfer Systems [6 hours]
Insulation Concepts, Storage Systems for Cryogenic Liquids, Transfer Systems, Industrial Storage and Transfer, Safety of the cryogenics system.

Course Objective

1 .

To get the knowledge on the properties of both matter and fluid for better design of the process equipment in cryogenics application

2 .

To understand the gas liquefaction and refrigeration system

3 .

Instrumentation in cryogenic system is essential for measuring properties at low temperature

4 .

safety in cryogenics is highly important for handling liquids or cryogens environment.

Course Outcome

1 .

1. The knowledge on the properties of both matter and fluid for better design of the process engineering in cryogenics application.
2. Understanding the gas separation system and able to calculate the no of plates require for the gas sparartion process at low temperature.
3. Instrumentation in cryogenic system is essential for measuring properties at low temperature
4. Unstanding the importance of the storage and transfer systems of the cyrogens (LOx, LN2, LH2, LHe)
5. Safety in cryogenics is highly important for handling liquids or cryogens environment.
