Syllabus

Module1: 7 Hours
Characterisation of electric power quality - Power quality terms. Power quality problems. Analyses of voltage sag, distortion, flicker etc. Definitions of various powers, power factor and other figures of merit under balanced, unbalanced and non-sinusoidal conditions.

Module2: 12 Hours
Theories of load compensation: Classical methods of power factor correction, voltage regulation and load balancing. Different methods of estimating compensator impedances. Matlab Simulations

Module3: 6 Hours
Instantaneous Reactive Power Compensators: Akagi’s definition of instantaneous reactive power and compensation technique. Power Quality concepts based on Akagi’s definition of instantaneous reactive power. Matlab Simulations

Module4: 7 Hours
Latest methods in compensator Design: Compensator design in 3-phase, 3 wire and 4 wire systems for unbalanced source and unbalanced load condition. Star and delta connected compensator design. Single phase active power filter design and Matlab simulation

Module 5: 6 Hours
Design aspects of custom power devices: Protecting sensitive loads using DVR, Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC).

Course Objectives

  • To understand the IEEE definitions of power and its components in single-phase circuits and 3 phase circuits and apply them to maintain the standards in power systems
  • Develop a load compensator for pf correction, voltage regulation and load balancing in steady state conditions
  • Apply instantaneous load compensation methods to correct load unbalance and harmonics
  • Apply the knowledge for the analysis and development of a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR)
