Syllabus

Module 1 Fundamentals of electric drives 12 Hours
Factors affecting selection of drives, characteristics of motors, types of load, torque balance, motor and load dynamics, steady state and transient stability, equal area criterion of stability, thermal considerations in motors, choice of appropriate motor rating based on heating starting, braking and speed control characteristics of dc and ac motors, transients in dc and ac drives, starting and braking time.
Module 2 Thyristor dc drives 12 Hours
DC drives: Performance parameters, single phase and three phase- semi converter and full converter fed separately excited dc motor and series dc motor, armature control and field control, motoring and braking operations, different modes of operation, waveforms for continuous and discontinuous current operations, expression of armature current one-, two- and four quadrant drives, dual converter: operation with and without circulating current, waveforms of dual converter fed dc drives, power factor and THD considerations of converters, power factor improvement of phase controlled converters sequence control of converters one-, two- and four quadrant choppers, chopper controlled dc drives: analysis, current expressions for continuous and discontinuous current operation.
Module 3 Closed loop control of dc drives 16 Hours
Closed loop control of dc drives: transfer function and state space modeling, inner and outer current control, current limit control, realization of P-I controller, design of controllers: Proportional speed control and inner current control, P-I speed controller with inner current control, load torque disturbance effects series DC motor modeling PLL based control of dc drives, Programmable logic control (PLC) of drives, state feedback control, pole placement design sliding mode control: sliding condition, reaching time, sliding mode controller design, design with boundary layer fuzzy control, fuzzy sliding mode control and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inferencing system (ANFIS) control of drives other recent control techniques for industrial drives.

Course Objectives

  • To learn the fundamental concepts of electric drives and to select motor of appropriate rating
  • To learn power electronic control of dc drives and to select appropriate converter
  • To design and develop closed loop controlled dc drives
  • To apply sliding mode control, fuzzy control and other recent control techniques to drives
