Syllabus

Module I: Stresses in Soils: Boussinesq’s Equation: Vertical Stress distribution on horizontal and vertical planes, Newmark’s influence chart, Contact pressure distribution.

Module II: Consolidation and Settlement Analysis: Equation of one-dimensional consolidation. Coefficient of compression, compression index, pre-compression pressure, over-consolidation, Coefficient of consolidation, Settlement analysis. Basics of three-dimensional consolidation, Sand drains.

Module III: Bearing Capacity of Shallow Foundations: Types of shear failure in foundation soil, Terzaghi’s bearing capacity equation its validation and limitations, Factors influencing bearing capacity. Bearing capacity of square, rectangular and circular footings. Bearing capacity based on in-situ tests. Mat foundation.

Module IV: Pile Foundation: Load carrying capacity of a pile (Static and dynamic formulae), Under-reamed piles, Pile load test, Pile group analysis, Settlement analysis of pile.

Module V: Earth Pressure, Retaining Structures and Sheet Pile Walls: Earth pressure Theories- Rankine Earth pressure theory, Coulomb’s Earth pressure theory. Sheet pile walls: Pressure against sheet pile walls, cantilever and anchored bulkheads (free earth support method).

Module VI: Stability of Slopes: Stability of infinite slopes, the stability of finite slopes.

Course Objectives

  • Introduce to different methods of soil exploration
  • Introduce to various methods of stability analysis of slopes
  • Estimation of vertical stress under different loading condition
  • Design and analysis of shallow and deep foundations.

Course Outcomes

CO1: Understand the basic concept of foundation engineering modules <br />CO2: able to carry out soil exploration at the site and determine the vertical stresses in soil subjected to various types of loading <br />CO3: apply the concept of consolidation to carry out settlement analysis of soil <br />CO4: evaluate the factor of safety of a slope <br />CO5: design shallow foundation, pile foundation and earth retaining structures
