Syllabus

Module 1 :

Module 1: Fundamentals of Biomedical Instrumentation: Generalized Medical Instrumentation System, Roles of Engineering in Healthcare facilities, Problems encountered during measurement of physiological parameters.

Module 2: Biometrics Physiological Transducers: Different types of transducers for measurement of physiological parameters and their selection for medical applications , Bio-Electric Signals: Origin of bio-electric signals, Various types of Bioelectric potential signal and their features, Biopotential electrodes Brief description of the physiological systems like Cardiovascular, Respiratory and Nervous systems and their analogy to electrical circuits. Cardiovascular Measurement: Electrocardiograph, Measurement of ECG, ECG electrodes, ECG Amplifiers, Driven Right leg circuit, Cardiac pacemaker, Phonocardiograph, Measurement of heart rate,

Module 3: Plethysmography, Blood pressure measurement Blood Flow Meters: Electromagnetic blood flow meter, Ultrasonic blood flow meter, Doppler flow meter Measurement of Electrical Activities in Muscles and Brain: Electroencephalograph, Electromyograph and their interpretations and applications Measurement of body temperature, GSR measurement.

Module 4: Respiratory System Measurement: Respiration rate measurement, Lung Volume and Lung Capacity, Spirometer, Ventilators Instrumentation for Clinical laboratory: Blood Gas Analyzers, Blood pH Measurement, Pulse oximeter, Blood Cell Counters: Coulter counters, Automatic recognition and differential counting of cells.

Module 5: Medical Imaging: Ultrasonography, X-ray, CT Scan. Overview of Miniatuarized devices used for recent biomedical applications.

Course Objective

1 .

To make the students aware about the application of sensors and the associated instrumentation schemes for measurement and diagnosis of various important physiological parameters for better healthcare technologies in biomedical domain

Course Outcome

1 .

After the completion of this course, students will be able to:
CO1: understand knowledge on fundamental principles and concepts of biomedical instrumentation.
CO2: describe the various bioelectrical phenomenon and measurement of various bioelectrical signals.
CO3: apply the knowledge of sensors, transducers for the measurement of blood flow as well as the electrical activities of brain and muscles.
CO4: analyze the characteristics of respiratory system.
CO5: describe the applications and design of medical imaging techniques and biomedical devices.
