Syllabus

Module 1:
Introduction of porous solid: Elementary concept of porous materials, classification.

Porous Ceramic: Characteristics of porous ceramic, classification- honeycomb ceramic, ceramic foam (open cell, closed cell). Concept of macropore, mesopore and micropore.

Fabrication of porous ceramics: Packed particle sintering, addition of pore former, foaming, polymeric impregnation, sol-gel synthesis, freeze drying, self-propagating high temperature synthesis. 15 Hours
Module 2:
Concept of cellular ceramic, wood ceramic, glass foam, hollow sphere, cellular concrete.
Characterization of pore structure and morphology. PPI method, Visiocell, capillary flow porometry, mercury intrusion porometry. Relative density, Permeability, thermal properties, electrical properties. 15 Hours
Module 3:
Applications: Liquid metal filtration, Gas (particulate) filtration, Kiln furniture, Heterogeneously catalyzed processes in porous cellular ceramic monoliths, Porous ceramic adsorbent materials, Biomedical, applications: Tissue engineering. 6 Hours

Course Objectives

  • 1. To provide knowledge about the performance and utilization of different type of porous/cellular ceramic.
  • 2. To make them familiar with different types of poroua/cellular ceramics and their synthesis techniques.
  • 3. To make them aware about structure and properties of porous/cellular ceramics and different characterization techniques.

Course Outcomes

CO1: Apply their knowledge about performance and utilization of different types of Porous/cellular ceramics <br /> <br />CO2: Apply their knowledge of synthesis techniques, structure and properties of porous/cellular ceramics in their professional workplaces. <br />CO3: Evaluate and judge the usefulness of a porous/cellular product for specific applications.
