Syllabus

1. Differential Thermal Analysis of a ceramic sample and to study the effect of heating rate on the DTA curve.
2. Thermogravimetric Analysis of a ceramic sample and to study the effect of sample mass on the TG curve.
3. Determination of particle size and Zeta potential of ceramic powder.
4. Determination of surface area and pore size distribution using BET method.
5. UV-Visible spectroscopy of a glass sample.
6. Determination of compressive strength and Modulus of rupture (3 point) of ceramic samples
7. Elemental analysis (Na, K, Li and Ca) of a ceramic sample using Flame photometry.
8. Indexing of XRD patterns and calculation of crystallite size.
9. Sample preparation of ceramic materials for microstructure study.

Course Objectives

  • 1. To learn about the basic principles of different instruments.
  • 2. To analyze data obtained from different instrumental characterization techniques.
  • 3. To explore the analysis in different field of research and applications.

Course Outcomes

CO1: Students will gain knowledge on the basic principles of different ceramic characterization <br /> instruments. <br />CO2: Able to design, conduct experiments, and interpret / analyze data. <br />CO3: Apply the theoretical knowledge imparted during the course to carry out characterization <br /> of materials for independent research and developmental work. <br />CO4: Able to independently formulate and solve problems as leader/ team member.
