Subject {L-T-P / C} : CH6435 : Analysis and Design of Pollution Control Devices { 3-0-0 / 3}

Syllabus

Industrial air pollution management: Air pollution sources, effects, meteorology, generation, transportation and dispersion of air pollutants, analysis of particulate matter and gaseous pollutants, air pollution control technologies, control of specific gaseous pollutants.
Selection, design and performance analysis of air pollution control devices: gravity settling chambers, solid traps, cyclone separators, electrostatic precipitators, bag houses and wet scrubbers. Devices for control and removal of gaseous pollutants, spray, venture scrubber, bubble column, packed and fluidized bed systems.
Industrial water pollution and its treatment: Wastewater characteristics, analysis of waste water flow rates and constituents, selection of design flow rates and mass loading, analysis and selection of treatment processes, reactors for waste water treatment, selection of wastewater treatment process.
Analysis and design of waste water treatment processes: Pre-treatment, primary, secondary and advanced treatment processes. Screening, settling, sedimentation, flotation, clarification, mixing, flocculation and neutralization, aerobic and anaerobic processes, suspended and attached growth processes, trickling filters, rotary drum filters, fluidized bed contactors, carbon adsorption, ion exchange and ozonation.

Course Objectives

  • The focus of the course is to provide basics of air and water pollution sources, properties, measurement and control
  • The course will provide the students the knowledge of currently available air and water pollution control technologies and devices
  • The theory behind the control methods, design of pollution control devices and efficiency analysis, as well as their applications

Course Outcomes

After successfully completing the course, the students will be able to: <br />1. Identify sources, types and quantities of pollutants and determine their impact on the environment <br />2. Analyse pollutant transport issues in the environment and Development of transport equations <br />3. Describe the operational principles of pollution measurement devices and discover their respective application <br />4. Analyse and select appropriate treatment process for specific effluents emerging from industries <br />5. Analyse and select and design various pollution control devices
