Syllabus

Biomass Sources and classification, Characteristics &preparation.Chemical composition and properties of different biomass materials. Biomass Logistics.,Biomass preparation for Energetic uses : drying, storage and handling of biomass Preparation of other wastes such as aqueous wastes containing biodegradable organic matter , animal residues for conversion to energy.
Microbial and biochemical aspects for biogas production, kinetics and mechanism, Digesters for rural application, High rate digesters for industrial waste water treatment. Sugar cane molasses and other sources for fermentation ethanol and bio-fuels, Biological process for ethanol and Butanol production. Dry and wet fermentation, Commercialization and Economic evaluation
processing of oils and fats for liquid fuels, Thermo-chemical conversion of biomass to energy, Biomass processing for liquid and gaseous fuel production, effect of parameters.
Chemical conversion process for Bio-diesel: Production of fuel Gasohol as a substitute for leaded petrol, Trans-esterification of oils to produce Bio-diesel.

Course Objectives

  • To learn different technologies for production of energy from different biomass waste materials in an efficient and eco-friendly manner.
  • To generate awareness in the society for the environmental and social problems

Course Outcomes

The important outcomes are <br />(1) Understanding the concept of waste management to produce energy, <br />(2) Understanding the mechanism of different energy conversion technologies, <br />(3) Ability to utilize the waste in an efficient and eco-friendly manner and <br />(4) Ability to generate awareness in the society for the environmental problems.
