Course Details

Subject {L-T-P / C} : CE6531 : Air Quality Management { 3-0-0 / 3}

Syllabus

Module I (8 HOURS): Air pollutants, sources, classifications, effects, atmospheric diffusion
of pollutants and their analysis, transport, transformation and deposition of air contaminants.

Module II (8 HOURS): Air sampling and pollution measurement methods, principles and
instruments automobile pollution, legislation for motor vehicle emission control, control of
automobile pollution.

Module III (8 HOURS): Particulate pollutant control: settling chambers, filtration, convective
diffusion collection of particles, electrostatic precipitation, cyclones, wet collectors, aerosol
dynamics discrete and continuous aerosol size distributions thermodynamics of atmospheric
aerosols condensation/evaporation, sedimentation and dry deposition, chemical equilibria,
aerosol-cloud interactions. aerosols and global climate, trends in anthropogenic emissions and
troposphere composition, solar and terrestrial radiation.

Module IV (8 HOURS): Gaseous pollutant control: gas absorption in tray and packed
towers stage efficiency, absorption with/without chemical reaction, adsorption in fixed beds,
wet scrubbers. Integrated air pollution control systems, effect of process parameters on
performance of control systems.

Course Objectives

  • This course provides adequate understanding of air quality status, impact and control.

Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to: <br />CO1: Concept of the fundamentals of air pollution and its associated environmental impacts. <br /> <br />CO2: Learn to describe the key concepts of air quality management.
