Syllabus

Hydraulics of alluvial rivers: regimes and morphology. Critical tractive force and resistance relations. Suspended, Bed and Total loads. Meandering, Braiding, Aggradation and Degradation. Routing of floods – reservoir and channel routing. Direct and indirect methods of measurements of flow. Direct methods: Weirs, flumes. Indirect methods: Velocity area method, Slope area method. Rating curves, float method, use of current meter for velocity area method using mean section method and mid-section method. Stage discharge rating curve. Interpolations for zero discharge stage. Corrections for rising and falling of stage due to unsteady conditions. Ultrasonic methods and other recent methods and tracer techniques

Course Objectives

 • 1. To prepare the students for a successful career as hydrologist and water resources engineers
 • 2. Ability to analyse river flow hydraulics
 • 3. Ability to analyse hydraulic geometry and to design stable alluvial channels
 • 4. Ability to plot the rating curve at any section

Course Outcomes

At the end of the course, students must be in a position to
1. Find the total load of the hydraulic structure
2. carry out the flood routing
3. find out the velocity of the river flow
4. to plot stage discharge rating curve
