Syllabus

Recombinant DNA Technology: Relevance and impact of rDNA technology, enzymes used in gene manipulation, host systems and vectors : their relevance and applications, Gene isolation, cloning and expression, DNA sequencing, oligonucleotide synthesis, Southern and Northern hybridization, FISH, PCR, RAPD, RFLP, DNA fingerprinting and their applications for diagnosis of disease, site-directed mutagenesis, Gene silencing, Gene transfer technologies, Gene therapy Molecular basis of genetic diseases, genetic counseling. Functional genomics: DNA chips and microarray gene screen technology transgenic animals and gene knockout techniques. Genome sequencing projects, advancement of genome sequencing using Next generation Sequencing (NGS). Study of emerging genome editing tools including zinc-finger nucleases (ZFNs), transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs) and RNA-guided engineered nucleases (RGENs) derived from the bacterial clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)-Cas (CRISPR-associated) system. Ethical clearances for recombinant products.
