Overview of cells, eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells and functions of cellular organelles Understanding gene, genome and DNA basics of gene cloning and vector Isolation and purification of DNA from living cells Methods of gene transfer transformation, competent cells applications of gene cloning polymerase chain reaction DNA sequencing DNA fingerprinting gene therapy Overview of protein engineering site directed mutagenesis random mutagenesis applications of protein engineering protein purification methods agarose and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis protein sequencing western blot ELISA.

Course Objectives

  • To understand basics of gene cloning and its application
  • To learn different methods of gene transfer in living cells
  • To learn different approaches of protein engineering
  • To learn basics of various analytical tools used in cell and molecular engineering.

Course Outcomes

1. Understanding basic concept of gene, genome, proteome and various other cellular organelles. <br />2. Understanding basics of gene cloning and its applications. <br />3. Learning various methods of gene transfer and pros cons of each method. <br />4. Learning various approaches of protein engineering. <br />5. Learning various analytical methods used in cell and molecular engineering.
