Subject Nature : Theory

Coordinator : Prof. Nandini Sarkar

Syllabus

The foundations of biochemistry- Cellular and chemical foundations of life, Introduction to Biomolecules – Chemical Composition and Reactivity, Water, pH and buffer system, Macromolecules and their monomeric subunits, Amino Acids, Proteins, Lipids, Carbohydrates, Nucleic Acids, Enzyme kinetics and Metabolism of carbohydrate and lipids. The concept of protein and nucleic acid sequencing.

Course Objectives

 • Identify the different classes of polymeric biomolecules and their monomeric building blocks.
 • Explain how the metabolism of biomolecules (carbohydrates and lipids) leads ultimately to the generation of energy.
 • Describe the structure of DNA, and explain how it carries genetic information in its base sequence
 • Explain the specificity of enzymes (biochemical catalysts), and the chemistry involved in enzyme action.

Course Outcomes

Students will be able to -
1. Have in-depth understanding of the structure and physicochemical properties of important biomolecules.
2. Apply basic principles of chemistry to biological systems and molecular biology
3. Demonstrate an understanding of fundamental biochemical principles, such as the structure/function of biomolecules, metabolic pathways, and the regulation of biological/biochemical processes.
4. Relate various interrelated physiological and metabolic events
5. Describe the classification and mechanism of enzyme action and inhibition
