Subject {L-T-P / C} : BM4603 : Measurements,Sensors and Transducers { 3-0-0 / 3}

Syllabus

Measurements: SI units, systematic and random errors in measurement, expression of uncertainty – accuracy and precision index, propagation of errors. PMMC, MI and dynamometer type instruments dc potentiometer bridges for measurement of R, L and C, Q-meter. Measurement of voltage, current and power in single and three phase circuits ac and dc current probes true rms meters, voltage and current scaling, instrument transformers, timer/counter, time, phase and frequency measurements, digital voltmeter, digital multimeter oscilloscope, shielding and grounding.
Sensors and Transducers: Resistive-, capacitive-, inductive-, piezoelectric-, Hall effect sensors and associated signal conditioning circuits transducers for industrial instrumentation: displacement (linear and angular), velocity, acceleration, force, torque, vibration, shock, pressure (including low pressure), flow (differential pressure, variable area, electromagnetic, ultrasonic, turbine and open channel flow meters) temperature (thermocouple, bolometer, RTD (3/4 wire), thermistor, pyrometer and semiconductor) liquid level, pH, conductivity and viscosity measurement.
Biochemical Transducers-Electrode theory, Biopotential electrodes, Different body surface electrodes, Optical sensor-photodetectors, Optical fiber sensors, Indicator mediated transducers, General principles of optical sensing. Recording electrodes for ECG, EEG and EMG.

Course Objectives

  • To develop an understanding of the basic principles of measurements and measurement systems.
  • To understand the methods of measurements and errors associated with measurements.
  • To understand the basic principle of sensors & transducers and their classifications.
  • To understand the characteristics of different biosensors & transducers and their application in biomedical field.

Course Outcomes

1. Students will be able to understand the purpose and methods of measurements. <br />2. Students will be able to understand the use of different display, recording, and measuring devices for various applications. <br />3. Students will be able to understand the concepts, types, working and practical applications of sensors. <br />4. Students will be able to know the principle of transduction, classifications and the characteristics of different transducers. <br />5. Students will be able to choose a proper sensor and transducer based on their characteristics for measurement of different parameters related to biomedical applications.
