Coordinator : Prof. Indranil Banerjee

Syllabus

Regeneration: An over view, Evolutionary perspective and origin of regeneration, Repair vs Regeneration, Tissue specificity, Types of regeneration (physiological regeneration , reparative regeneration (epimorphic regeneration ) hypertrophy , morphallaxis). Regeneration and aging. Developmental clues in regeneration.
Cells in Regeneration: Stem cell (embryonic stem cell and adult stem cells, cell source, type, properties, signaling, stem cell niche), progenitor cells, dedifferentiated cells, and trans-differentiated cells. Extrinsic factors that influence regeneration. Morphogenesis and re-integrative processes in regeneration.
Practice of regenerative medicine: Therapeutic regeneration of bone marrow, skin, bone, muscle, heart, pancreas and liver. Induced pluripotent stem cell and its application in regenerative medicine. Induced regeneration (growth factor and gene therapy, tissue inductive scaffold based approach, smart therapeutic system). Ethical issues of regenerative medicine.

Course Objectives

 • To aware the student about the existence of various kind of natural regenerative processes across the animal kingdom which are worth to exploit for the advancement of regenerative medicine
 • To provide an idea about the commonality between basic biological processes of development and regeneration
 • To introduce essential components of regenerative medicine like stem cells , stem cell niche, growth factors etc
 • To give a comprehensive idea about the present practices of regenerative medicines in human health and its future prospect

Course Outcomes

After completing the course, the student will be able

(i) to differentiate between repair and regeneration and identify the process of regeneration in different species including human by analyzing the course of tissue /organ regrowth.
(iii) to design a therapeutic strategy for the regeneration of a given tissue organ
(iii) to analyze the outcome of a regenerative process by accounting the contribution of participating cells and other factors.
(iv) to compare and appreciate among different strategies used in regenerative medicine.
