Syllabus

Classification, Sources, Mechanism of enzyme action. Qualitative and quantitative Characterization of enzymes. Strategies for purification of enzymes. Methods for investigating the kinetics of Enzyme catalysed reactions – Initial velocity studies, Estimation of MichaelisMenten parameters, Effect of pH and temperature on enzyme activity, kinetics of inhibition. Modeling of rate equations for single and multiple substrate reactions. Techniques of enzyme immobilization kinetics of immobilized enzymes, effect of solute, partition & diffusion on the kinetics of immobilized enzymes, design and configuration of immobilized enzyme reactors applications and economics of immobilized enzyme technology. Industrial process using enzymes for production of drugs, fine chemicals and chiral intermediates.

Course Objectives

  • To introduce the catalytic mechanisms of enzyme reactions, with an emphasis on: cofactors in enzymology, mechanisms of group transfer reactions and oxido-reduction reactions
  • To realise the various applications of enzymes in the fields of food industry, pharmaceutical industry and other applications

Course Outcomes

At the end of the course, students should be able: <br />1. To realize the significance of enzymes in day today life and today’s concerns <br />2. To understand the mechanisms and kinetics of enzymatic reactions <br />3. To comprehend the factors influencing various enzyme immobilization techniques <br />4. To appreciate the role of enzyme technology in various industries to produce bioproducts
