Syllabus

Basic Modelling Principles: Introduction, definition of Modelling and simulation, different types of models. Mathematical Models for Biochemical Engineering Systems: Batch Reactor, CSTR isothermal with cooling/heating jacket or coil, Continuous Stirred Tank Bioreactor, Fed Batch reactor, Batch distillation. Aspen plus simulator for flowsheeting and simulation of various bioprocesses, Basic data analysis-curve fitting. Modelling approaches for Biological Systems Growth kinetic Models - structured and unstructured systems Compartment models Deterministic and stochastic approaches for modelling structured systems Thermal death kinetics models, Stochastic Model for thermal sterilization of medium. Modelling for activated sludge process, Model for anaerobic digestion, Model for lactic acid fermentation, antibiotic production, Ethanol fermentation.

Course Objectives

  • To understand and learn abour Aspen plus flowsheeting and simulation of bio processes.

Course Outcomes

1. Students will be able to learn about the flowsheeting of a complex unit operations and bio processes and simulation. <br />2. Students will be able to design optimize various bioprocess unit operation. <br />3. Students will be able to simulate unit operation for various industrial operations. <br />4. Students will be able to develop new processing unit for desired operation. <br />5. Students will be able to analyse and predict the desired outcome for complete industrial unit operations.
