Introduction General design information Mass and energy balance Flow sheeting Piping and instrumentation Materials of construction for bioprocess plant Design considerations for maintaining sterility of process streams and process equipment with various containment level.
Vessels for biotechnology application Design of bioreactors: Design of mechanically agitated fermenters and non-mechanically agitated (bubble column and air lift) fermenters Design for temperature control (heat exchangers) design for agitation and aeration Oxygen transfer in submerged fermentation processes oxygen uptake rates and determination of oxygen transfer rates and coefficients role of aeration and agitation in oxygen transfer. Heat transfer processes in biological systems Utilities for biotechnology production plants Fermentation economics Bioprocess validation Safety considerations Case studies.
Introduction to instrumentation and process control in bioprocesses: Measurement of physical and chemical parameters in bioreactors - Monitoring and control of dissolved oxygen, pH, impeller speed and temperature in a stirred tank fermenter Computer application in bioprocess.

Course Objectives

  • Idea about large scale bioreactors operation at industry.

Course Outcomes

Students will learn how large scale bioreactors are opearted at industry. <br />2. Students will have idea about the steps to be followed for commercialising a product from that currently produced in lab.
