Syllabus

Basics of environmental biotechnology, Biodiversity and community dynamics analysis using molecular tools [amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA), restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), Temperature gradient gel electrophoresis (TGGE) etc.], Metagenomics and Next Generation Sequencing Technology, Microbial growth and metabolism Respiration and energy generation Enzyme kinetics and regulation, microbial transformation reactions (aerobic and anaerobic biotransformation), Bioremediation technology and influencing factors, Microbial detoxification of organic pollutants and endocrine disruptors (insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, polychlorinated biphenyls, heavy metals), Environmental monitoring-bioreporter, biomarker and biosensor, quorum sensing technology, Biological energy and biomass production from waste, Waste water treatment, Activated sludge treatment process, Sustainable waste management Environmental impact assessment, GMOs and Biosafety, Ethical issues in environmental biotechnology.

Course Objectives

  • To build knowledge about resent advancement and application of biotechnology in environment

Course Outcomes

Develop knowledge on the importance of microbial diversity in environmental systems <br />Application of biotechnology as well as the importance of molecular approaches in environmental microbiology <br />Describe existing and emerging technologies for removal of environmental contaminants
