Syllabus

Understanding the concepts, definitions and types of disaster: Hazards and Disasters, Risk and Vulnerability in Disasters. Natural and Man-made disasters- earthquakes, floods drought, landside, land subsidence, cyclones, volcanoes, tsunami, avalanches, global climate extremes. Man-made disasters- Terrorism, gas and radiations leaks, toxic waste disposal, oil spills, forest fires.
Disaster Management Cycle and Framework: Disaster Management Cycle – Paradigm Shift in Disaster Management,
Pre-Disaster – Risk Assessment and Analysis, Risk Mapping, Zoning and Microzonation, Prevention and Mitigation of Disasters, Early Warning System Preparedness, Capacity Development Awareness During Disaster – Evacuation – Disaster Communication – Search and Rescue – Emergency Operation Centre – Incident Command System. Post-disaster- Relief and Rehabilitation, Damage and Needs Assessment, Restoration of Critical Infrastructure – Early Recovery – Reconstruction and Redevelopment.
IDNDR, Yokohama Strategy: Yokohama Strategy and Plan of Action for a Safer World: guidelines for natural disaster prevention, preparedness and mitigation.
Disaster Management in India – Mega Disasters of India and Lessons Learnt Disaster Management Act 2005 – Institutional and Financial Mechanism, National Policy on Disaster Management, National Guidelines and Plans on Disaster Management Role of Government (local, state and national), Non-Government and Inter-Governmental Agencies
Case study (or study on the application of the architectural & construction techniques in buildings) on any topic from the above mentioned modules by the students. Submission of report along with oral and visual presentation.

Course Objectives

  • To provide basic conceptual understanding of disasters, to understand approaches of Disaster Management and to build mitigation skills to respond to disaster.
