Syllabus

Module I
Building and energy- domestic energy consumption, commercial sources of energy, problems associated with conventional energy sources climate and building- factors affecting climate, climatic zones and their characteristics, implications of climate on building design, urban climate, microclimate, tools for analyzing weather data
Module II
Principles of energy conscious design- building envelope, passive heating, passive cooling, daylighting, building materials thermal performance of buildings- heat transfer, solar radiation, simplified method for performance estimation, computer-based tools
Module III
Design guidelines- general recommendations, specific guidelines for commercial, industrial and residential buildings in hot and dry climate, warm and humid climate, moderate climate, composite climate, cold and cloudy climate, cold and sunny climate integration of emerging technologies- renewable energy technologies, promotional incentives, conservation measure
Module IV
Case-study on energy efficient buildings in India in different climates

Course Objectives

  • To be able to design a building with eco-friendly and less energy intensive materials, incorporating passive solar techniques and renewable energy technologies

Course Outcomes
