Syllabus

Module1: Introduction: Applicability and limitations of surface mining methods, Stripping Ratio, Preliminary evaluation of surface mining projects, pit limits, ultimate pit depth. [6 hours]
Module2: Surface Mining Methods: Development of Mineral deposits by opencast mining methods, design, and layout of opencast mines. [7 hours]
Module3: Methods of stripping, Bench geometry, Bench height, Bench slope angle, Bench Width, and Design of benches. [7 hours]
Module4: Slope stability study. Drilling, blasting, loading, and transportation in opencast mines. [4 hours]
Module5: Equipment used for different operations in surface mines, Choice and their application. [4 hours]
Module6: Placer Mining and Sea bed Mining: Ground sluicing, Hydraulicking, and Dredging. Exploitation systems of ocean mineral resources. (4 hours)
Module7: Relevant provisions of coal mines and metalliferous mines regulations. [1 hour]
Module8: Environmental problems due to surface mining and their remedial measures. [1 hour]
Module9: Recent developments in the deployment of heavy earth moving machinery in the surface mines. [1 hour]

Course Objectives

  • To understand the economics of Surface Mining and safe means of mining mineral reserves and Mining deposits under various geo-mining conditions using various equipment combinations with layouts including in-pit-crushing technology.
  • To Understand the viability of surface mining and Conversion of underground coal mines to surface mines.
  • T understand the Opening of deposits under various geo-mining conditions and haul road design, Construction of external and internal dumps.
  • To understand Blast design parameters under various geo-mining conditions and Reclamation and mine closure plan.
