Syllabus

Module1: Introduction: Introduction to Geotechnical Engineering, Soil and Rock characterization, Discontinuities
Module 2: Properties: Physical and mechanical properties including swelling potential, different strength parameters and their determination, Hydraulic properties of rocks and determination.
Module 3: Rock Stress: Stress-Strain relationships, Stress and strain in two- and three-dimension, Mohr’s circle and applications
Module 4: Elastic and Time dependent properties of rock: Rock Deformability and its measurement. Elastic and non-elastic behavior, influence of time on rock properties
Module 5: Theories of rock failure: Rock Strength, Analysis of Stress-Strain Curve, Rock failure and different failure criteria. Effect of anisotropy on rock strength
Module 6: Rock Mass Classification: Classification system and their applications, case studies

Course Objectives

  • To understand the origin of rock and soil, and their different characteristics that influence the behaviour
  • To understand the development of failure criteria and to develop and predict rock failure criteria.
  • To Determine the physical, mechanical, rheological and other properties of rocks and quantify their influence on mining excavation
  • To draw stress-strain relations and their utility in excavation activities

Course Outcomes

1. To introduce earth materials, their characteristics, and predict different properties of rocks/soils <br />2. To study behavior of rocks in various excavation systems and predict the failure criteria with environmental conditions <br />3. To determine predict the stress-strain behaviour of rocks and their application in field
