Syllabus

1. Injection moulding of thermoplastic polymers.
2. Tensile testing of the prepared polymer samples.
3. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) of PET bottle and PP granule: Define various parameters.
4. Effect of curing on the glass transition temperature of epoxy by DSC.
5. Fabrication of glass fiber reinforced epoxy composite using hand lay-up technique
6. Determination of density and volume fraction of the constituents in a glass fiber reinforced epoxy composite.
7. Evaluation of the effects of fiber volume fraction on the flexural properties of the GE composites.
8. Creep experiment on G5 composite
9. Fabrication of Cu-Al2O3 metal matrix composite with different weight fraction of reinforcement.
10. Effect of reinforcement content on the Hardness and microstructure of Cu-Al2O3 metal matrix composites.

Course Objectives

  • To familiarize students with the basics of thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers and their Mechanical and Thermal behaviour
  • To make students understand different types of composites and their applications
  • Fabrication of various composites and their characterization techniques

Course Outcomes

1. An understanding on various types of Engineering Polymers. <br />2. Tensile behavior study of thermoplastic polymers. <br />3. Use of Differential Scanning Calorimetry for analyzing various phase transformations in commonly used polymers and polymer composites. <br />4. Hands-on experience on Fabrication of Polymer matrix and metal matrix composites. <br />5. Determining the reinforcement content in a polymer composite and analyzing its effects on the overall performance of the composites. <br />6. Understanding the Mechanical behavior of various composites.
