Phenomenological description of various modes of failure, fracture, fractography

Different failures: Fatigue failure, creep and stress rupture failures, environment-assisted failures, wear failures, common failures in castings, weldments, gears, shafts and springs, failures of composites

Analyses of engineering failures: Typical defects, macroscopic fracture surface examination, metallographic and fractographic examination, steps in failure analysis, case histories.

Course Objectives

 • This course is aimed to discuss about defects in materials, their origin and different methods of defect the defects in engineering materials.

Course Outcomes

1. Development of skills about fracture mechanics
2. Development of knowledge-base to understand different engineering failures
3. Generation of the skills about different non-destructive test methods and their implementation
4. Learning of methods to detect/estimate the cracks/flaws those are present in materials
5. Development of knowledge-base to understand the reasons behind various mechanical failures through structure-property correlations.
6. Development of understanding about different case studies from recent reports on failure analysis
