Syllabus
Module-1 (09 hours)
Groundwater Hydrology: Importance of GW, available water on earth, Hydrologic cycle, types of the aquifer, storage coefficients, groundwater basins, Darcy’s law, permeability.
Module II (10 hours)
Well hydraulics: Pumping test, water wells, test holes, and well loss. Methods of Drilling deep wells, cable tool drilling method, rotary method, pumps.
Module III (07 hours)
Surface investigation of groundwater: Use of Remote sensing, geophysical exploration, electrical resistivity method, seismic refraction method, gravity, and magnetic methods, water witching,
Module IV (10 hours)
Sub-surface investigation of groundwater: Test drilling, geologic logging, geophysical logging, resistivity logging. Artificial recharge of groundwater. Conjunctive use of water.
Course Objectives
- To know the formation of groundwater and assessment of its potential.
- To know groundwater storage, specific yield and specific retention of an aquifer.
- To familiar with different drilling methods, and Geo-physical exploration methods.
- To understand Different surface and subsurface investigations of groundwater, the process of artificial recharge of groundwater, and Conjunctive use of water.
Course Outcomes
1. Familiar with aquifers, porosity, hydraulic conductivity, specific yield and retention in groundwater. <br />2. Analyse different types of aquifers and asses groundwater potential. <br />3. Familiar with different drilling methods and Geo-physical exploration methods. <br />4. Understand different surface and subsurface investigations of groundwater. <br />5. To understand methods of artificial groundwater recharge and Conjunctive use of water.
