Syllabus

Water quality description, various characteristics of water, water quality criteria and standards, mass balance, steady-state solution, and response time, particular solutions, elements of reaction kinetics, spatial and temporal aspects of contaminant transport, transport mechanism-convection, diffusion, dispersion river and streams, convective diffusion equation and its application, water quality in rivers, Streeter-Phelps: model for point sources, BOD and oxygen, gas transfer and oxygen re-aeration, distributed systems (steady-state), water-quality environments, rivers and streams, estuaries, lakes and impoundments, dissolved oxygen and pathogens, BOD and oxygen saturation, gas transfer and oxygen reaeration, Streeter-Phelps model: point and distributed sources, photosynthesis/respiration, eutrophication and temperature, eutrophication problem and nutrients, heat budgets, thermal stratification, water quality management, socio-economic aspects of water quality management, environmental impact assessment and analysis of water resource projects, groundwater remediation

Course Objectives

  • An ability to independently carryout research/investigation and development work to solve practical problems
  • Ability to write and present a substantial technical report/document
  • : Students should be able to demonstrate a degree of mastery in Water Resources Engineering.

Course Outcomes

Ability to outline the extent of water pollution in selected global locations. <br />Ability to understand the basic concepts of groundwater quality and modeling. <br />Ability to understand and apply concepts of water quality and pollution processes in rivers and lakes.
