Syllabus

MODULE I [2 Hours]
Brief Overview of Air Transportation, Classification of airports - ICAO standards, Various Organizations related to Aviation and airports, Their functions and responsibilities.

MODULE II [6 Hours]
Aircraft Characteristics, Airport Reference and Airport Marking, Critical Dimensions, Types of Engines, Gear Configurations, Types of Speed, Wake Turbulence, Standard Temperatures and Pressure for Operation, Various types of Loads, Relationship between Pay Load and Range.

MODULE III [8 Hours]
Airport components- Zoning laws Runways- orientation and geometric design, Windrose Diagram- Runway patterns Taxiways- alignment- geometry and turning radius- exit taxiways Aprons- planning and design.

MODULE IV [6 Hours]
Airport Lighting and Marking, Visual Aids, Visibility and Approach Path, Visual Approach Slope Aids, Precision Approach Path Indicator, Lighting on different components of Runway and Taxiway, Considerations for Runway and Taxiway Lightings.

MODULE V [6 Hours]
Airport Planning, Airport System Planning, Airport Master Plan, Airport Project Plan, Air Traffic Demand Forecasting, Various Methodologies to Forecast Air Traffic, Design principles of critical, semi-critical, and non-critical airport pavements.

MODULE VI [6 Hours]
Airport hangars- their planning and design criteria Apron and Terminal Building Design, Airport terminal layout, Airport Noise in Design of Airport, Aircraft Noise Effects, and drainage- general aspects.

Course Objectives

  • Knowledge of planning of airport
  • Knowledge of various important components of airports
  • Knowledge of planning and orientation of airport facilities
  • Knowledge of Design consideration of airfield pavement

Course Outcomes

• CO1: understand the basic concepts of airport and airport elements and their planning and design, • CO2: get acquainted with the various airport components and their design aspects, • CO3: understand the different planning methods of airport facilities, • CO4: understand airport design and planning as per ICAO standards, • CO5: understand site investigation and landscaping of airports.
