Syllabus

Introduction to advanced materials, such as nanocrystalline materials, smart materials, super alloys, bulk metallic glass, and quasi-cystals.
Introduction to characterization techniques, such as XRD, SEM, TEM, and Thermal analysis techniques.
Mechanical alloying: Historical perspective, The process of mechanical alloying, Mechanism of alloying, Characterization of powders, Temperature rise during milling, Synthesis of advanced materials through mechanical alloying, Solid solubility extensions, Solid-state amorphization, Powder consolidation, Sintering methods and principle of sintering, Powder contamination, Applications of mechanical alloying, Safety hazards.
Severe plastic deformation: Introduction, Advantages, Equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP), High pressure torsion (HPT), Accumulative roll bonding (ARB).
Rapid solidification: Historical perspective, thermodynamic criteria, methods of rapid solidification - droplet, spinning and surface melting technologies.
Bottom-up approaches: Physical vapor deposition (PVD), Sputtering, Inert gas condensation, Laser ablation, Chemical vapor deposition (CVD).

Course Objectives

  • Understanding of advanced processing techniques and their application for synthesis of advanced materials.
