Syllabus

Laws of thermodynamics and their applications Enthalpy Entropy associated with different processes Gibbs and Helmholtz free energy Criteria of equilibrium Concepts of activity, fugacity and standard states Ellingham diagram, Free energy – composition diagram, Solutions – Raoult’s and Henry’s Laws, Ideal, real and regular solutions, Gibbs – Duhem equation,. Activation energy and its applications, Homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions, Factors affecting the heterogeneous reactions kinetics in solid – solid, solid – gas and solid – liquid systems, Rate controlling steps Kinetic model equations, Fick’s laws of diffusions and their applications in metallurgy, Slag – metal reaction kinetics, Concept of boundary layer and its impact on reaction kinetics.

Course Objectives

  • Enriches fundamental knowledge of the students about dynamism of the process from thermodynamic and kinetic considerations

Course Outcomes

1. The students will understand equilibrium properties of macroscopic systems, laws of thermodynamics, and fundamental thermodynamics variables. <br />2. The students will understand the concept of free energy, chemical potential, and chemical equilibrium. <br />3. The students will be capable of linking between the free energy composition curves and phase diagrams which forms the basis of materials engineering . <br />4. The students will be capable of utilizing concept of the thermodynamics in solving some of the metallurgical problems. <br />5. The students will understand the concept of rates of chemical reactions. <br />6. The students will be aware of the kinetic limitations to achieve equilibrium conditions in the perspective of metallurgical phenomena.
