Syllabus

1. Performance characteristics analysis of analog P, PI, PID controllers using simulated systems.
2. Time response analysis of a process with P, PI and PID controllers using digital process control trainer.
3. Time response of various linear systems using linear system simulator.
4. Study the effect of ON/OFF, P, PI and PID controllers on the temperature of an Oven.
5. a) Performance analysis of ON/OFF, P, PI and PID controllers of heat exchanger.
b) Study the working principle of P to I & I to P convertor.
6. Simulation of different pneumatic systems using P-Simulator.
7. Simulation of different hydraulic systems using H-Simulator.
8. Simulation of a second order system with P, PI and PID controller using MATLAB/LabVIEW.

Course Objectives

 • To familiarize with the functioning of real time process control systems like heat exchanger, temperature control of oven etc.
 • To acquaint with the process control trainer of linear systems.
 • To analyze the performance of different types of controllers.
 • To characterize the final control elements, like control valves and actuators.

Course Outcomes

After the completion of this course, students will be able to:

CO1: Demonstrate the effect of P, PI and PID controllers on the process variables.
CO2: Analyse the variations in process variables due to external disturbances.
CO3: Design different Pneumatic and Hydraulic systems using pneumatic as well as hydraulic components.
CO4: Design appropriate controllers for different processes.
CO5: Study and analyze the closed loop response of PD, PI and PID controllers for higher order systems.
