Subject {L-T-P / C} : CE6502 : Biological Process Design for Wastewater Treatment { 3-0-0 / 3}

Subject Nature : Theory

Syllabus

Module I (8 HOUR): Overview of wastewater engineering, terminology in wastewater
treatment, wastewater sources, nature and characteristics, wastewater collection, systems of
sanitation and water carriage, water borne disease, scenario of industrial pollution.

Module II (8 HOUR): Estimation of wastewater flows and variation in wastewater flow,
Estimation of storm water runoff, reactor Analysis, unit operations and processes,
microbiological concepts, water quality modeling, DO and BOD in streams, reliability and
cost effectiveness of wastewater systems.

Module III (8 HOUR): Theory and Design of biological treatment processes, Aerobic
treatment such as activated sludge process, Extended Aeration, waste stabilization ponds,
oxidation ditches, biotower, Biofilm Processes: trickling filters, aerated lagoon.

Module IV (8 HOUR): Anaerobic treatment: anaerobic filters, sludge treatment and disposal,
Design of a wastewater treatment plant, attached growth reactors, decentralized wastewater
treatment systems low cost options, constructed wetlands, capabilities and constraints of
industries for pollution control.

Course Objectives

  • To understand the principles and theories for treatment of wastewater by biological processes

Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to: <br />CO1: Select or construct appropriate treatment schemes to remove certain pollutants present <br />in wastewater. <br /> <br />CO2: Knowledge to characterize wastewater, and the best available biological treatment of <br />wastewater.
