Strategy and the Quest for Competitive Advantage: Origins of Strategy, Schools of Thought in Strategic Management, Strategic Intent- Vision, Mission and Purpose, Dimensions and Levels of Strategy. Competitive Strategy: Porter’s Five Forces Model, Generic Strategies (Cost Leadership, Differentiation, Focus), Value Chain Analysis. Diversification Strategies, Vertical Integration Strategies, Mergers, Acquisition and Takeover Strategies, Strategic Alliances and Collaborative Partnerships. Corporate Portfolio Analysis: Business Portfolio Analysis, Synergic Effect, BCG Matrix, GE 9 Cell Model, Concept of Stretch, Leverage and Fit. Blue Ocean Strategy. Strategy Implementation: Structure, Systems and People: Project Implementation, Procedural Implementation, Resource Allocation, Organization Structure, Matching Structure and Strategy, Corporate Culture, McKinsey’s 7s framework, Concepts Of Learning Organization. Strategy Evaluation: Operations Control and Strategic Control, Symptoms of Malfunctioning of Strategy, Balanced Score Card, Business Processes and Capabilities-Based Approach to Strategy.

Course Objectives

  • Describe the practical and integrative model of strategic management process that defines basic activities in strategic management
  • Analyze the competitive situation and strategic dilemma in dealing with dynamic global business environment in terms of rapidly changing market trends and technological advancement
  • Evaluate challenges faced by managers in implementing and evaluating strategies based on the nature of business, industry, and cultural differences

Course Outcomes

The course will expose students to various perspectives and concepts in the field of Strategic Management, so that they can achieve conceptual clarity and could apply these concepts to the solution of business problems.
