Governing Equations and introduction to physical processes in atmospheric models, Parameterization, Different parameterizations, Surface parameterization-land surface and atmosphere interaction, soil-vegetation-atmosphere parameterization, Water- atmosphere parameterization Planetary boundary layer and turbulence parameterization – Reynolds averaging, Turbulence closure, Non-local closure schemes, Turbulence and horizontal diffusion Convective parameterization- shallow and deep convection, Influence of deep convection, Deep-layer control convective schemes, Low-level control convective schemes, Trigger function Microphysical parameterization-Introduction, Particle types and size distribution, Bulk microphysical parameterization schemes Radiation parameterization-basic concepts, longwave radiative flux, shortwave radiative flux, Radiative transfer data Orography parameterization

Course Objectives

  • To impart knowledge relating to physical parameterizations.

Course Outcomes

Students would be able to gain knowledge relating to different types of physics parameterizations used in numerical models
