Basic Concepts of Power System Reliability Evaluation: Adequacy and Security, Functional Zones and Hierarchical Levels, Requirements for Power System Adequacy Assessment, Reliability Cost/Worth, Adequacy Indices. Basic Probability Theory: Review of probability concepts, probability distributions, application of binomial distribution to engineering problems, network modeling, system reliability evaluation using probability distributions, frequency and duration techniques. Generation, Transmission and Distribution System Reliability Evaluation: Concept of LOLP and E(DNS), evaluation of these indices for isolated systems, reliability analysis using the frequency and duration techniques Generating System Adequacy Assessment: Single-Area Generating System Adequacy Assessment-State Duration Sampling Method, Single-Area Generating System Adequacy Assessment-State Sampling Method, Multi-Area Generating System Adequacy, Multi-Area Generating System Adequacy, Different Supporting Policies in Multi-Area Generating System Adequacy Assessment: Composite System Adequacy Assessment: System State Sampling Method and System Analysis Techniques, Incorporation of the Annual Load Curve, Generating Unit Derated States, Regional Weather Effects, Transmission Line Common Cause Outages, Bus Load Uncertainty and Correlation, Frequency Index and System State Transition Sampling Technique, Security Considerations in Composite System Adequacy Evaluation, Noncoherence in Composite System Adequacy Distribution System and Station Adequacy Assessment: Basic Concepts and Analytical Techniques for Distribution System Adequacy Assessment, Monte Carlo Simulation Approach to Distribution System Adequacy Assessment, Station Reliability Assessment Reliability Cost/Worth Assessment: Customer Surveys and Customer Damage Functions, Generating System Reliability Worth Assessment, Composite System Reliability Worth Assessment, Distribution System Reliability Worth Assessment, Minimum Cost Assessment in Composite System.

Course Objectives

  • Objective of this course is to explain the basic philosophy of power system reliability analysis through system adequacy assessment.

Course Outcomes

CO1: Through the course, student will be able to revise the concept and application of probability theory. <br />CO2: Students will understand the fundamentals of power system reliability. <br />CO3: Students will be able to assess the degree of adequacy level in generation and operation planning. <br />CO4: Students will be able to correlate the reliability aspects of power system with power system economics.
