Syllabus

Introducing Atmospheric Instrumentation, Stevenson’s Screen and its components, Temperature and Humidity measurements, Sling Psychometer, Explanation of Automatic Weather Station (AWS), demo of AWS installed at Department’s rooftop, Introducing Pocket Weather meter and other handheld weather instrument, Demo for recording observations using these handheld instruments, Introducing Different Atmospheric Instruments, e.g., Radar, SODAR, LiDAR, Solid State Sensors, Pressure measurements, wind measurements, rainfall measurement, Explaining the Research Publication, Demonstration of Microtop available at Department, Demonstration of Laser Precipitation Monitor available at Department, Demonstration of GPS Recorder available at Department, Demonstration of Lagrangian Model runs for plotting Back/forward air mass trajectories, Discussion about Clouds (Types, Identifications), Visit to various sites at NIT Rourkela Campus for recording weather observations using handheld instruments and plotting and analysis of observations collected, plotting and analysis of recorded observations, presentations of results obtained during observations recording and data collected by other Government agencies available for other sites in public domain.

Course Objectives

  • To understand the working principles of various instruments.
  • To learn monitoring/measurements of parameters using atmospheric instrumentation.
  • Data analysis and depiction of results from these observations.

Course Outcomes

CO1: Understanding the basic weather instruments and their working principles. <br />CO2: Learning the atmospheric measurements using hand-held instruments. <br />CO3: Understanding the planning and executing an experiment for weather measurement. <br />CO4: Data analysis and interpretation of in-situ observations. <br />CO5: Learning to produce a quality-controlled dataset ready for archiving in a database, including handling and storage of measured data.
